Every so often, art breaks out of its confines to become an event. People who would never normally go to a gallery do so; they feel part of it when they would otherwise feel excluded. Such is the case with Hennie Boshoff's creation in the Château of Pauligne, near Carcassonne in southern France.

This is a house where art, in every form, fills every nook and cranny. It's a striking spectacle, taking in house and garden. The project took many years to complete and many artists and craftspeople, here and overseas, have had a hand in it. Original motifs were incorporated everywhere. The guiding force behind the creation of Vulindlela is international arts consultant Hennie Boshoff. An Afrikaner who lived in exile in Europe for many years, Boshoff returned to his place of birth in the late 90s, determined to help foster empowered creativity among South African artists. During his self-imposed exile, he established a not-for-profit entity, the Azazel Institute, based in the South of France, and sponsored works by international artists.

Lilian Cingo and Hennie Boshoff did a lot of ground work during Traditions New and Old/Amasiko Nezithethe Amatsha Namadala, in 1992: a lot has changed and not changed since then. There are no more grants or conferences, but African Artists continues, like the virus, at times in silent incubation or remission. Mutating.
